Travelin’ Joe Passov (Golf. com) says that Charleston, South Carolina is “that rare destination that combines authentic Southern charm, a double dose of American history — both Revolutionary War and Civil War battles were waged here — and must-play trophy courses in one handsome package.”

What follows is a guide to a few of the best public and semi-private Golf Courses in Charleston SC based on ratings by Golf Digest, the PGA and the general public.

Charleston National Golf Club(Mount Pleasant)

  • Par: 72, 7064 yards
  • 75.1 rating, 142 slope
  • Architect: Rees Jones

This course was planned as an exclusive private club, but right before its opening in 1987 Hurricane Hugo changed that plan. It has been rated by Golf Digest  as the as the best non-resort course in the Charleston area.

Charleston National runs along the Intracoastal Waterway, through natural wetlands and ponds and a pine and oak tree forest; it offers some of the best views on the southeastern coast.

In addition to an outstanding golf course, Charleston National offers a full size state of the art practice facility, the newly renovated Rees Jones pub, and a clubhouse available to host a wedding, meeting or special family event.

Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club

  • Par: 72, 6,700 yards
  • 72.5 rating, 133 slope
  • Architect: Russell Breeden

Golf Digest calls Shadowmoss, located 12 miles from downtown, the “best golf value in Charleston”. The course is a favorite with locals and visitors alike, and according to the Charleston Golf Guide, it is a “club without pretense. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time guest, you feel comfortable at Shadowmoss – in the clubhouse, on the range and on the course.”

Shadowmoss also offers newly renovated Junior Olympic and Toddler pools and a Nautilus Fitness Center. Members are given a key for the Fitness Center and can work out 24 hours a day; a personal trainer is available by appointment.

Coosaw Creek Country Club

  • Par: 71, 6593 yards
  • 72.7 rating, 140 slope
  • Architect: Arthur Hills

Coosaw Creek is a member-owned semi-private golf course and country club with over 600 grand homes located within a 30 minute drive from downtown Charleston.

This golf course winds through wetlands surrounded by oak and pine trees. Coosaw Creek has a complete golf practice facility equipped with a natural grass driving range, a chipping and a putting green; weekly golf leagues for men and women; and one of North Charleston’s premier eating establishments, The Palmetto Grill.

Coosaw Creek is very family-friendly, with a Junior Olympic swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, and a fenced playground with swings and climbing structures. Junior golf activities and swim lessons are also available.

Some other highly rated golf courses to check out are The Links at Stono Ferry, Dunes West Golf Club and The Golf Club at Westcott Plantation.
