Charleston, SC was founded in 1670 across the Ashley River from the Downtown that we know today. The peninsula of Charleston is surrounded by the Ashley River to the West and the Cooper River to the East. In 1690 the Settlers moved to the area that we know today. In the 1700's Charles Town grows into a major trading post and plantations begin to line the rivers. Charleston was attacked by the French, the Spanish, and even Blackbeard the Pirate during this time.
In 1721 Charleston became a Royal Colony. In 1745 Lots were laid out for the Ansonborough neighborhood. In 1751 the city was divided into two parishes. St. Michael's called South of Broad, which is the most sought after place to live today, and St. Pauls's called North of Broad. In 1761 the first services were held at St. Michael's which is the oldest surviving church building in the city. In 1770 the Harleston Village was developed.
By 1775 Charles Town's population was estimated to be 12,000. Charles Town played a large part in the Revolutionary War and was occupied by the British for two and a half years.
The end of the Revolutionary War brought about the beginning of the Antebellum period. On August 13, 1783 the name Charleston was officially adopted. The development of Radcliffborough began in 1786 when the State Capital was moved from Charleston to Columbia.
On March 20, 1843 The Citadel admitted it's first class of cadets. On April 12, 1861 the first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter. Charleston went through 587 days of Federal bombardment which began in 1863 and survived Sherman's March to the Sea.
